Halifax Psychologist - Dr. Brent Conrad
About Dr. Conrad
I am a registered clinical psychologist and the owner of Green Leaf Psychological Services in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Education
I completed my Bachelor of Science degree in psychology at Dalhousie University, my Master’s degree in clinical psychology at Simon Fraser University, and my Doctorate degree also at Simon Fraser University. I also completed additional doctorate training at the University of Manitoba.
Treatment Approach
In therapy, I use a client-centred, solution-focused approach, combined with elements of cognitive behavioural therapy and motivational interviewing. I also have training and experience using a psychodynamic model and incorporate this approach when it can be helpful. I believe that developing a sense of hope, self-confidence, and taking control of one’s life are three of the most important therapy goals and are also essential factors for personal growth and satisfaction. Clients are assisted in identifying clear attainable goals for personal change and empirically validated methods are used to help achieve these goals. Read more about my approach to therapy and assessment.
Experience
I have 20 years of experience working in hospitals, forensic settings, psychiatric institutions, community agencies and clinics, university counselling centres, and private practice. I work with children, adolescents, and adults and have experience providing individual therapy, couples counselling, and group therapy. Offering in-person and online appointments.
Services Provided
I provide child, adolescent, and adult assessments, as well as adult and older adolescent therapy and couples counselling. I am not currently taking new child therapy clients.
Although I provide personal therapy for a wide range of personal difficulties, I am particularly interested in helping those with issues related to self-esteem, anger management, personal relationships, internet and video game addiction, family, assertiveness, self-confidence, depression, and grief. I am the author of several books including the recently released "How to Help Children Addicted to Video Games - A Guide for Parents".

“In your view, what are the qualities of a good psychologist?”
The answer to this question is obviously subjective, so all I can do is offer my own opinion. The following list is certainly not the definitive set of criteria for selecting a therapist.
However, these are qualities I try to work toward in my own practice and if I was looking for help I would expect my psychologist to:
● Be warm, non-judgemental, and easy to talk with
● Be friendly, have a sense of humour, and relate to me as a real person
● Be psychologically healthy him/herself
● Help me set attainable goals, work with me to achieve them, and be willing to change therapy goals if necessary
● Be understanding of any reservations or questions I may have about therapy
● Have the proper education, training, and experience related to my particular issue
● Be respectful at all times
● Offer referrals if he/she cannot provide appropriate treatment for my difficulties
● Be dependable and understanding
● Show genuine interest in the difficulties I am having
● Be willing to meet with other members of my family if I request it
● Demonstrate high ethical standards and have clear professional boundaries
● Be willing to see me in times of crisis
● Not dismiss other forms of therapy I may be interested in
● Genuinely seek to understand me and not make assumptions about my experience
