Halifax Counselling & Therapy
Seeking help from a psychologist

Choosing to ask for help from a psychologist or counsellor can be very difficult for many people.
Although most of us have no problem seeing a doctor when we are not feeling well physically, we tend to be much more reluctant to ask for help for emotional, psychological, relational, or personal reasons.
People sometimes believe that it is acceptable to seek help for a physical problem but that for emotional or psychological difficulties, “I should be able to handle this on my own”. After finally booking an appointment, many of my clients informed me that counselling was “a last resort” after struggling for months or years with a particular issue.
However, the stigma that was once attached to seeing a psychologist or counsellor is rapidly disappearing.
● Seeing a psychologist does not mean that you are “crazy” of that something is wrong with you. Normal, healthy people work with psychologists to gain insight, learn new skills, become more confident, and experience more satisfaction and fulfillment in their lives. Furthermore, therapy with a psychologist does not have to be a long term commitment as research has found that noticeable improvements can occur even after a small number or sessions.
● Seeking help is not a sign of weakness, but rather, a recognition that something about your life could be improved and that you are now taking action to make positive changes.
● Starting counselling does not mean that you need someone else to solve your problems for you. In fact, a very important part of therapy is making your own decisions, actively addressing problems in your life, and becoming more confident and capable of doing so without the assistance of anyone else (including your therapist!). Effective therapy encourages independence and confidence, not dependence and self-doubt.
Sometimes people ask me whether they “need” therapy. This may surprise you, but my typical answer is “probably not”. However, I do think this may be the wrong question to ask. Rather than asking whether you need therapy, it is much more helpful to ask whether you can benefit from seeing a psychologist for a few sessions. My answer to this question is “probably yes” - and luckily, decades of scientifically controlled research supports this conclusion!
So, to summarize:
1. Seeing a psychologist is nothing to be ashamed of.
2. It can help you make positive and lasting changes in your life.
With these two points out of the way, below is a list of some of the Halifax counselling issues I commonly provide treatment for. Note that the list is by no means exhaustive and you are more than welcome to contact me if you have any questions about your particular concern.
