IQ, Academic, and Gifted Assessment in Halifax, Nova ScotiaI provide comprehensive intelligence, academic, and gifted assessments for children, adolescents, and adults.
Formal testing with a psychologist can provide official diagnoses and make you or your child eligible for special programming, accommodations, and funding. |
How can testing for giftedness and IQ be beneficial?
It is sometimes thought that only those with academic or school-related concerns that could lead to a diagnosis (e.g., Learning Disorders or ADHD) are seen for psycho-educational assessments.
This is not the case at all - many children, teens, and adults can benefit from the information revealed during an intelligence test or academic skills assessment. An assessment does not have to be reaction to a problem that has become out of control or as a desperate last attempt to find answers.
In fact, a proactive assessment may be most helpful when the signs of a potential problem are first noticed, or when someone is looking to identify strengths and weaknesses to guide educational planning, apply for funding, and improve school performance.
Academic and IQ-only testing usually takes less time and is less expensive, but can be just as informative and helpful as a full psycho-diagnostic assessment.
So, beyond testing for learning disabilities or ADHD, why would someone choose to have an assessment for intelligence, memory, academic performance, or giftedness?
Why Get an IQ Test, Academic Assessment, or Gifted Evaluation?
To evaluate social or emotional difficulties that may be preventing a person from reaching their academic potential.
Sometimes, it is not a lack of ability or intelligence that is preventing optimal school achievement. Instead, social, emotional, or interpersonal issues may be responsible for grades that do not accurately reflect what a child, teen, or adult is capable of.
To assist with career planning or retraining.
An assessment may be helpful for those considering a new line of work, choosing to go to university or college, and in identifying areas of academic or intellectual strength.
To test for intellectual or academic giftedness.
If you are wondering if your child is intellectually or academically gifted, an assessment can identify this so that this is taken full advantage of through appropriate academic and intellectual pursuits.
To identify memory impairment or other cognitive deficits.
Memory impairments, poorly developed memorization skills, inefficient use of mnemonics, and the ability to remember one form of information over another (e.g., visual vs. verbal memory) may be partially accountable for school or academic difficulties.
To be eligible for funding for special educational needs.
Following a diagnosis, children or adult may be eligible for special funding and/or may qualify for additional in-school and at-home academic programs.
