Fees and Payment - Halifax Psychologist
Fees for Psychological Services in Nova Scotia

Rate for Service
● The fee to see a psychologist at our Halifax clinic follows the rate recommended by the Association of Psychologists of Nova Scotia for psychologists in the province - currently set at $210 per clinical hour for counselling.
● Most Nova Scotia universities (including Dalhousie University, Saint Mary's University, and Mount Saint Vincent University) provide 100% coverage for students to see a psychologist in private practice - please check with your university health plan or student association for details.
● Fees for assessment are charged at $220 per clinical hour and includes interviews, testing, scoring, report writing, and feedback – which is standard practice among psychologists.
Payment Forms
Visa, MasterCard, Debit, and cash are accepted. There is no additional processing fee for using a credit card.
HST / Tax
There is no HST / GST charge for psychological service. The fee you ultimately pay is simply the per hour rate - no extra taxes.
Insurance
The fees for psychologists in Nova Scotia are covered by many private or company insurance plans. As a general rule of thumb, if you have
coverage for dental expenses you are probably also covered for psychological service. Fees for counselling and assessment in Nova Scotia are not covered by your general health card (MSI).
Note that many insurance policies will only cover therapy / assessment with a registered psychologist, and not with a “therapist”, or “coach”. The practice of psychology is a tightly regulated profession requiring advanced graduate degrees, years of extensive training and supervision, and ongoing continuing education. In contrast, literally anyone can call themselves a therapist or coach (no degree or training is required to do so) – which is why only the fees for registered psychologists are typically covered by insurance plans. See Halifax Psychologists and How to Choose One and Nova Scotia Psychologists - FAQs for more information.
Tax Deductions
The fees for psychological services are tax deductible as a medical expense – save your receipts!
